Bakelaar Jewellers – A Listowel Jewellery Store Legacy of Craftsmanship Since 1917
The story of Bakelaar Jewellers began over a century ago in 1917, when W.A. Johnstone Jeweller first opened its doors on Main Street in Listowel, Ontario. Built directly over the Maitland River, the original location endured frequent flooding—on several occasions, staff were forced to carry merchandise to higher ground to protect it from rising waters.
In 1967, Neil and Alice Bakelaar purchased the business, continuing the tradition of fine jewellery and watchmaking. The store operated under the Johnstone name until 1970, when it was officially incorporated as Bakelaar Jewellers Limited.

As floods continued to plague the downtown core, a turning point came in 1980 with the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority’s Conduit Project. This major infrastructure initiative required the demolition of flood-prone buildings, including the original store, to install an underground channel that would safely carry the river through town. During this period, Bakelaar Jewellers relocated to Wallace Avenue North.
In March 1994, the business proudly returned to Main Street, marking a new chapter in its history. That same year, Tim and Neil Bakelaar, along with many dedicated community members, helped restore the historic clock tower from the old post office. Today, the tower proudly stands as a symbol of Listowel’s heritage and is lovingly maintained by Tim Bakelaar.
In 2000, Neil and Alice Bakelaar officially retired, passing the torch to Tim and Karen Bakelaar, who continue to lead the business with passion and vision. The store has evolved with the times, embracing innovation while staying true to its roots. In 2014, Bakelaar Jewellers became a proud Canadian Diamond Boutique, reinforcing its commitment to quality and Canadian craftsmanship. In 2023, Waterford Crystal recognized Bakelaar Jewellers as a Penrose Club retailer.
The store has also hosted esteemed guests from Waterford, Ireland, including Tom Brennan, Philip O’Keeffe, and Gerard Treacy, representatives of the world-renowned Waterford Crystal. Over the years, the Bakelaar Jewellers sign has been updated three times since the family took over in 1967—each version a reflection of growth and progress.
Of course, none of this would be possible without the support of our exceptional staff, whose professionalism and dedication have helped make Bakelaar Jewellers what it is today.
