Caring for Your Waterford Crystal
Wash crystal separately in warm, soapy water, rinse thoroughly and dry with a lint-free cloth. Dishwashers are not recommended, as they can dull or scratch the surface.
Avoid extreme changes in temperature, as thermal shock can cause crystal to crack. The rim is the most fragile part of a crystal piece; never place crystal on its rim when drying or storing.
Coloured crystal can be damaged by contact with bleach, solvents or sharp edges.

The Art and Craftmanship Behind Waterford Crystal
Creating Waterford Crystal is a remarkable combination of heat, precision and generations of craftsmanship.
At the House of Waterford, approximately two tonnes of raw crystal material are melted every day at 1,400°C. The molten crystal collects in a pot at the heart of the furnace, glowing bright orange from the intense heat. Master Blowers gather the molten crystal to create each piece, while Master Stemmers use their trained eye to determine exactly how much crystal is needed to form the stems and feet of stemware.
Becoming a Waterford Master Cutter requires years of dedication. Apprentices complete a five-year apprenticeship followed by three years of mastery. At the end of their apprenticeship, they must successfully complete the eight-inch Apprentice Bowl, featuring every type of cut in Waterford’s catalogue and requiring 10 cutting-wheel changes. Only then can they progress to mastery.
Master Cutters use different wheels for each style of cut, changing them repeatedly as they work. Complex designs can require exceptional precision and patience. For example, when cutting a star into the base of a decanter, the cutter must look through the narrow neck of the piece to see the area being cut. With experience, Master Cutters can eventually create intricate patterns from memory.
Master Engravers use copper wheels coated with an abrasive mixture of carborundum dust and oil to create intricate designs. Diamond-tipped tools allow them to capture even the finest details.
Meanwhile, Master Sculptors transform solid blocks of crystal using diamond saws. Depending on the complexity of the design, a single sculpture can take months to complete.
